Nestled in the tranquil district of Bejuco, Nandayure, Playa San Miguel—also known as "Los Maderos" is a hidden gem in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This stunning beach stretches approximately 3 kilometers, bordered by Punta Bejuco to the north and the Javilla Estuary to the south.
Physical Features
Playa San Miguel boasts soft, grayish-brown sand and a gentle slope that expands during low tide, revealing a wide, flat shoreline. The area is surrounded by lush coastal vegetation, including palm trees and other tropical foliage that provide natural shade, creating the perfect setting for relaxation.
Surfing Conditions
Known for its consistent waves, Playa San Miguel is a surfer's paradise. From December to March, northern and northwestern swells create ideal surfing conditions. However, the waves can vary depending on the weather and other environmental factors, offering a mix of challenges that keep each session unique. The beach provides both small and big, front-facing waves, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. The best surf sessions typically occur during high tide or a rising tide, ensuring an exciting yet approachable experience for all skill levels.

Macaw Recovery Network (Formerly Proyecto Ara)
In the stunning region of Punta Islita near San Miguel, the Macaw Recovery Network stands as a beacon of hope for the conservation of Costa Rica’s iconic macaws. This project is dedicated to the protection and reintroduction of Scarlet Macaws and Great Green Macaws into their natural habitat. Through successful breeding programs and community education, the network has released over 150 Scarlet Macaws in the area since 2011. Visitors can enjoy educational tours to learn about their conservation efforts and witness these majestic birds thriving in the wild.
CREMA (Center for the Rescue of Endangered Marine Species)
In the heart of San Miguel’s coastal region, CREMA works tirelessly to protect endangered marine life, with a special focus on sea turtles. The organization leads impactful programs including nest relocation, beach monitoring, and environmental education to safeguard turtle nesting sites in southern Nicoya Peninsula beaches. CREMA also advocates for sustainable fishing policies to ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems.
